Who we Are

The University of the Philippines Diliman Center for International Studies (UPCIS) was established in October 2000. It was envisioned to generate knowledge about the countries of the world and their interrelated cultures and ecological, social, economic, political, ideological, and gender systems. It aims to enable Filipino students to appreciate their multicultural origins as well as enrich their own development, to have a deeper understanding of the complex and diverse world toward a more peaceful co-existence among peoples of the world.

The UPCIS on its 25th year

On 10 October 2025, the UP Center for International Studies (UPCIS) formally marked its 25th year of founding.
The UPCIS was established through the UP Board of Regents with a mandate to be “a leading source of knowledge of the countries of the world to enable the Filipino to gain access to this knowledge and meaningfully relate to the outside world.” Since then, the Center has exemplified its interdisciplinary and global aspirations through its academic, extension, and research work.

Our mandate is to become a premiere center of scholarship on Asia, Europe, and the Americas in the university and the country as a whole.

Programs Offered

The UPCIS offers both General Education (GE) and elective courses in the Undergraduate level.

Agenda And Plan For Extension

Aims to enable Filipino students to become more conscious and responsive to the myriad structures and experiences that shape the region, and to better appreciate their origins and the forces that shape their lives as a people.

International Linkages

The UPCIS collaborates with different schools and institutions in the Philippines and abroad in order to develop its pool of resources and strengthen its practices towards fulfilling its mandate to the university.
Linkages have been established with partner universities Yokohama National University, Ferris University, and Japan Women’s University in Japan, while it is working on formalizing links with the University of Hamburg in Germany and the Bolivarian University of Venezuela in Venezuela. While it has nurtured connections with Philippine-based organizations such as the Japan Foundation Manila and various Embassies to the Philippines.

UPCIS Composition

The UPCIS works directly under the Office of the Chancellor of the University of the Philippines – Diliman (UP-D) and is headed by a Director. Currently, the duties and activities of the UPCIS are grouped into three divisions according to the existing pool of expertise of its staff and affiliates, each headed by a Coordinator: East and Southeast Asian Studies, European Studies, and American Studies.
Its overall policy is provided by a Coordinating Council chaired by the Chancellor of UP-D, consisting of deans from the following units whose composition ensures the multi- disciplinal nature of the UPCIS: the Asian Center, the College of Architecture, the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Law, the College of Music, the College of Science, the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, the School of Economics, and the School of labor and Industrial Relations.
